Discount Sports Nutrition

There was a time (I think it was shortly after man discovered Lycra and the thong) when discount sports nutrition products consisted mainly of water-based beverages plus some electrolytes (potassium, sodium), a little sugar and some coloring. Ah, the simple life. Athletes now have to choose from roughly seven different categories of beverages alone--not to mention gels, bars, powders and more.

New products in the sports market are emphasizing a couple of things: low carbohydrate content (drinks), high protein content (drinks and some bars), and the addition of special ingredients such as extra caffeine, certain herbs, some amino acids and vitamins.

Sports drinks are far and away the largest category of discount sports nutrition products. According to a recent article in Muscle and Fitness, fewer than half of the sports drinks available today were on the market five years ago.

The selection of a sports beverage hinges on the sport a consumer participates in and what the athlete desires as far as performance assistance. For example, there are low-carb drinks, fat-burner drinks, high-carb drinks, protein drinks, meal-replacement drinks, thermogenic drinks and specialty drinks. And that's just the beginning, because within each category are many brands--many similar to each other, but some unique. Here's a taste of some of the newest products flooding the sports beverage market.

Capitalizing on the popularity of high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets (which have been favored by some groups of athletes for years and shunned by others), a few new sports products now tout high-protein content. Bars are the obvious place to put extra protein, and manufacturers are devising proprietary mixes of proteins, often including whey protein isolate, calcium caseinate and soy protein isolates, to achieve their high-protein goals.
