Many African Americans and Hispanics who suffer from osteoarthritis also have symptoms of major depression, according to findings presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. Researchers found that about 19 percent of both African Americans and Hispanics with osteoarthritis reported symptoms of major depression. Among patients who reported any depressive symptoms, 73 percent of African Americans and 65 percent of Hispanics said their symptoms made it at least somewhat difficult to function.

The researchers assessed baseline levels of depression among 322 African Americans and 318 Hispanics diagnosed with osteoarthritis and participating in two separate studies of arthritis pain medication. They determined the levels of depression using the PHQ-9, a screening tool developed by Pfizer. Osteoarthritis is a condition characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage, causing the bones to rub against each other. It can result in pain and loss of movement.
